The Mysterious Night and the Murkmire Abyss
Dear Diary,
Last night was so strange. In the middle of the night, I saw a sudden light shine through my window. Curious, I went over to take a look. The light was coming from the direction of the Umbralith Crypt cave gate. I peeked behind the curtains and saw a group of wizards and witches with their faces covered. It didn’t feel right, and I got a shiver down my spine.
In the morning, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I saw. I told Lilith and Albert about it. Lilith thought they might be Obliterators, but Albert wasn’t so sure. He said Obliterators have never come to the school in such a way before.
Albert suggested we talk to Peter about it, since he’s from Umbralith Crypt. Plus, we hoped Peter would also be selected for the Grand Jamboree, so we planned to meet him at Murkmire Abyss.
After breakfast in the food yard, we headed east through the Ebonshades Forest to Murkmire Abyss. The name sounded scary, but the place itself was even more dangerous than I imagined. As we walked, I noticed other selected students were there too — Mara, Aric, Peter, Jacob, Janifer, Tansy, and others. Seeing Jacob and Janifer together made me miss Adam even more.
The path to Murkmire Abyss seemed to change as we walked. The ground felt like it was turning into stairs, even though it looked like flat stone. I felt like we were descending into a deep pit, even though it was a straight path. The forest was dark, and even though it was morning, it felt like midnight.
When we finally reached Murkmire Abyss, my heart started pounding. The place reminded me of a dream I had when I first came to Ebonvale Town. In the dream, I was thirsty and walked down the stairs of Luna Mount Palace. When I reached the last step, the palace turned into this place, and something grabbed my leg, paralyzing me. I held Albert’s hand tightly, feeling terrified.
Professor Lyra Emberforge, Ms. Tailholme, and Mr. Servius were already there. Mr. Servius noticed my frightened face, but I tried to ignore him. Professor Emberforge gathered us in a circle and talked about the importance of the boundaries created by the school. She explained how important the school island is compared to the rest of Ebonvale Town. She also mentioned that the Lord of the Lores would be arriving for the Grand Jamboree, and we selected students were assigned to help manage the safety of the town. It was a chance to show our skills and maybe even become part of the Obliterators. Lilith was thrilled since she’s always dreamed of becoming an Obliterator and admires the famous ex-Obliterator, Wanda Witchington.
Professor Emberforge said we had to gather again tomorrow night for duty assignments. She warned us that the tasks would be difficult, and if anyone wasn’t ready, they should return their letters to the Arborpost. Then she dismissed us.
We went back to our favorite spot in the food yard, the last seat in the open air. I told Albert and Lilith about my dream at Luna Mount Palace. They were a bit confused, but Albert suggested that to find answers, we should be part of this event.
The rest of the day felt like a blur. My mind was buzzing with everything that had happened. I kept thinking about the dream, the cryptic figures, and the Grand Jamboree. I don’t quite understand what actually means by that, “Every fifty years, the Jamboree aligns with the celestial convergence, a time when the barriers between worlds are weakest.”I couldn’t shake the feeling that something big was about to happen, something that could change everything.
As night fell, we knew we had to be careful. We decided to take turns keeping watch, just in case anything strange happened again. I took the first watch, sitting by the window and peering out into the darkness. The moonlight cast eerie shadows, and every rustle of the wind made me jump. But I was determined to stay alert.
As I sat there, my thoughts drifted back to Adam. I missed him so much. I wished he were here with me, to share in these strange and exciting adventures. I wondered what he would think about all this, and if he would have any advice for me.
The night passed slowly, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. When it was finally my turn to sleep, I curled up in bed, hoping for a dreamless night. But my dreams were filled with swirling lights and shadowy figures, making me restless.
Tomorrow is a new day, and I know we have to be ready for whatever comes our way. We need to stay strong and stick together. I have a feeling that the Grand Jamboree will be a turning point, and we need to be prepared.
Yours in anticipation,
Zoe
